Ward takes on tough South Dakota swing
Morgan Ward competed in multiple stacked Late Model fields from Thursday through Sunday as she raced at a trio of South Dakota tracks.
On Thursday, Ward kicked off three days of racing with the Tri-State Late Model Series at Huron’s half-mile Dakota State Fair Speedway. Her No. 37JR ride was one of 36 Late Models in the pits with a $3,000 winner’s share up for grabs. After a fifth-place finish in her heat race, Ward just missed transferring through the B-Main into the 25-lap feature.
The next night, another $3,000 was on the line at the 1/3-mile Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen. With 35 Late Models on the property, Ward came home third in her heat and was slated to start 13th in the main event before rain washed out the remainder of the evening.
Saturday saw Ward return to Dakota State Fair Speedway to compete in a 35-car field for a $5,000 top prize. She turned in results of fifth and third in her heat races, putting her on the 10th row to begin the A-Main. She picked up two spots in the 25-lapper to come home 17th.
Finally, Ward wrapped up her four-day slate on Sunday evening with a trip to Casino Speedway to race with the WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series. She was among 32 Late Model drivers seeking the $3,000 winner’s share at the quarter-mile track in Watertown.
In the WISSOTA event, Ward turned in results of eighth and 14th in her heat and B-Main, respectively, after recording a DNF in both races. However, she earned a provisional for the 40-lap feature and gained one position to score a 24th-place result, but registered another DNF.
